Size your camshaft according to your vehicle's purpose and RPM limit. Your RPM limit is mainly dependent upon your stroke, valves, valve springs, and rockers.

A way to quickly estimate your camshaft's peak Hp rating is to use the following simple equation:

Where:

  • R = Peak power RPM
  • E = Exhaust duration (in degrees)
  • I = Intake duration (in degrees)

This is just a general estimate, but will help you with configuring your build.

Please also consider that, generally, the longer the duration of the camshaft (intake or exhaust), the less efficient lower RPM operation will be. If you drive your car on the street regularly, it's not recommended to run a long duration camshaft. Use our DynoGen application for more help.
