Size your camshaft according to your vehicle's purpose and RPM limit. Your RPM limit is mainly dependent upon your stroke, valves, valve springs, and rockers.

A rule of thumb to finding your camshaft's peak Hp rating is to use the following simple equation:

Where:

  • R = Peak power RPM
  • E = Exhaust duration (in degrees)
  • I = Intake duration (in degrees)

Please also consider that, generally, the longer the duration of the camshaft (intake or exhaust), the less efficient lower RPM operation will be. If you drive your car on the street regularly, it's not recommended to run a long duration camshaft. Use our DynoGen application for more help.
